Tour suggestion by Kaspar Sutter
We asked various personalities from the region which companies they will be visiting on Industry Night. The fifth tour suggestion comes from Kaspar Sutter, Member of the Executive Council of the Canton of Basel-Stadt.
My personal discovery tour
We take heat, electricity and clean water for granted. But it takes a lot of work in the background to ensure that we can turn on the light switch or run water from the tap at any time: my starting point on the Industry Night is therefore IWB, our cantonal water and energy supplier. IWB produces drinking water for Basel at the Lange Erlen pumping plant. The water origins from the river Rhine, as there is not enough groundwater in Basel. IWB demonstrates on site how water from the Rhine is processed into our fresh drinking water.
The tour continues to Stücki Park in Kleinhüningen. The park is home to various companies from the life sciences and innovation sector. On the Industry Night, the medical company Medartis opens its doors to the interested public and shows how the high-quality and innovative medical products for the fixation of bone fractures are manufactured.
Logistics, and therefore the Rhine ports of Basel, play a major role in enabling local companies to process raw materials and export their products. They are indispensable for supplying Basel and the whole of Switzerland. That's why my tour takes me to the logistics company Ultra-Brag at Basel's Dock 2. Ultra-Brag is an important logistics company in the harbour. The Industry Night provides exciting insights into the company's 100-year history.
Next on my tour is the Basel Exhibition and Congress Centre. Basel has been a trade fair city for centuries, making modern, high-quality exhibition and congress infrastructure essential. For architecture enthusiasts, there are guided tours of Messe Schweiz every hour on Industry Night.
Finally, I will be travelling to Lottner, where I will be speaking at a panel discussion on the opportunities and challenges for the circular economy. It is a key element in ensuring that the canton of Basel-Stadt achieves the net zero target by 2037, and Lottner has been contributing to this with its services for over 125 years.
